Under the supervision of the Unit Manager, assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of all assigned patients. Cares for patients aged neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric with a variety of medical/surgical problems at various developmental levels. Patients are from both traditional and nontraditional family structures with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds. The Registered Nurse is responsible to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for assigned patients. The Registered Nurse demonstrates competency in nursing practice as outlined in the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. The Registered Nurse must be trained to provide care for patients in their primary department.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Updates Care Plans weekly and use of Triggers and Rap Summaries to complete them.
  • Completes MDS forms within fourteen days of patient s admittance to the unit.
  • Draws blood and blood sugars according to departmental procedures.
  • Provides respiratory therapy treatment when Respiratory Therapist not available.
  • Regulates oxygen and decreases according to oximetry readings. Monitors oxygen administration by medication aides.
  • Assures Patient Care Assistant chart restorative cares.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
Education

Knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of an accredited school of nursing to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse.
Will complete Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within five years of hire from an accredited nursing program (if an ADN or Diploma RN)
Licensure and Certification
Current Nebraska license as a Registered Nurse.
Current certification in Basic Life Support.
After 2 years of employment, strongly encouraged to pursue certification in specialty area.
Experience
Approximately six month s on-the-job experience to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of hospital, unit, departmental procedures and policies to meet quality and quantity standards.
Skills
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to gather and exchange information with physicians, patient, family, visitors and other hospital personnel.
Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement effective nursing care and problem-solving measures for patient's physical, psychosocial and spiritual well being.
