Medical Support Assistant

The Medical Support Assistants (MSAs) assigned to these sites are responsible for performing a variety of technical support duties that facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nursing assistants, and other members of the medical facility who provide direct patient care. Provides care and/or services appropriate to the age of the patients being served, and which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation of the patient. Communicates and treats customers and their family members, significant others, and guests in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner without exception. Interacts with both internal and external customers, demonstrates skill in operating computer systems and applications such as VistA, CPRS (including VistA Imaging), and Microsoft Applications to accurately enter or extract information. Will perform duties related to the work of this position, as assigned. The employee uses initiative and works independently within the framework established by the supervisor/lead/senior employee for carrying out recurring assignments and refers specific problems not covered by the instructions or standard operating procedures to a designated employee or the supervisor for assistance and/or a decision. The employee maintains confidentiality, and ensures a patient's right to privacy is not compromised. Work Schedule:

Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicated the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. OR Education:

Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. (Transcripts required) English Language Proficiency:
Must be proficient in spoken and written English. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation). Preferred

One year of experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level. OR Education:
Four years of education above high school. AND Demonstrate Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidates must demonstrate all of the KSAs below:
1. Ability to operate computerized programs and systems in order to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive medical and patient identifying information (PII) into or from electronic health records, scheduling systems, and/or reports.2. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology specific to understand medical diagnosis and procedures sufficient to communicate clinical staff instructions to patients.3. Ability to schedule medical appointments in a clinical setting.4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishments of a wide variety of duties performing patient support work.5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, electronically, and/or by telephone, with internal and external customers.6. Skill in customer service with the ability to identify customer concerns, and refer to the appropriate staff, as necessary, to ensure a satisfactory resolution. References:

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
